Perry Technical Institute requires prospective students to pass an enrollment assessment prior to enrolling for certain programs. Each program’s assessment is designed to ensure applicants have the knowledge and skills required to be successful at Perry.

Many students are nervous about taking the enrollment assessment, especially if they have been out of school for a long time. We are here to help! We can provide study guides, go over requirements, and explain more about the items you will need to know for the assessment. If you take some time to review the information below and the study materials for your program's assessment, you will feel prepared when you come in to take your test.

Scheduling an Assessment

Enrollment assessments can be scheduled from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Thursday. We recommend planning for two hours to complete your first attempt at the assessment. This is a guideline, not a time limit; the assessment is self-paced and you can take more time if you need it. We recommend you plan for one hour to retake a single section of the assessment.

At that time, an assessment specialist can help you find study guides, go over requirements, and explain more about the items you will need to know for the assessment. What to Bring

Supporting items such as a calculator, pencil, or scratch paper will be provided by the Assessment Center if they are allowed.

• Photo ID - You must show photo ID when you come to complete the assessment so that we can verify your identity.

Acceptable forms of ID:

• State-issued ID card
• State-issued driver's license
• Expired or punched ID or driver's license
• Temporary state-issued ID (paper version) with photo
• Passport
• US Permanent Resident Card
• Tribal ID
• School ID card
• Credit card with photo
• Any other official photo ID determined to be authentic by enrollment staff.

Unacceptable forms of ID:

• • Military ID
  • WA DOC Offender ID
• High School or GED Transcript (Optional) – you don’t need to bring your transcript when you come for the assessment, but the earlier you turn in your transcript, the earlier you can reserve your seat in a class before it fills up. Transcripts must be official, sealed in the original envelope from your high school.

Retakes and Wait Time between Assessments

All assessment sections have a four (4) attempt limit, except algebra which only allows two (2) attempts.

If you do not pass all sections of the assessment, there is a minimum wait time before you can try again. This is to give you time to study and prepare for your next attempt.

You must wait:

• 24 hours between the first and second attempt
• 14 days between the second and third attempt
• 24 hours between the third and fourth attempt

Assessment Expirations

If you pass at least one section of the assessment, but not all sections, you will have 6 months from the initial date to pass the rest of the sections. If you do not complete all sections within this time frame, your assessments scores will expire and you must retake all sections. When you come in the first time, you will take all the required sections. If you do not pass all sections of the assessment, you will only need to retake the sections you did not pass.

Once all assessment sections have been passed, your scores are valid for 2 years. Scores must be valid at the time that you start class. If your assessment scores expire before you begin class, you will have to retake the assessment.

 
Remedial Courses

If you do not pass an assessment section within the allowed attempts, you will be required to take a remedial course before you can continue. The Assessment Center will provide more details on the remedial course if required. Remedial courses are taken online at your own pace.

Once you pass the remedial course, you will be able to start an additional round of assessments. 

Tutoring

We only offer tutoring to students that are currently enrolled in classes at Perry Tech. We do not offer tutoring for students attempting the enrollment assessment. If you pass the algebra assessment with a low score, you may be required to attend tutoring once you start class. This may be once or twice a week and may last from six to ten weeks, depending on the situation.
